Chapter One

When mum was born on July 24th 1951, my grandmother Dorothy McCurdy and my grandfather Samuel Victor McCurdy were living at Longley Avenue West in Sheffield. Mum was always proud of her Yorkshire roots and she used to tell me about her grandparents whose surname was Fisher. When mum was about two and a half years old, she came to live in Belfast along with my uncle Alex, who was about one year old. This was because my Grandfather was originally from here. When they arrived here, they had to stay with my great grandfather McCurdy in a house in Lawther Place until they found a place of their own. Life was never easy for mum, money was short in those days and her childhood was a tough one. But I think that these beginnings helped to give her the strength of character she had, as well as the loving care she received from my grandmother. I remember her telling me that she had learned to cook dinner for all the family by the time she was eleven years old. I saw a picture of her once as a baby and she was the cutest most adorable baby ever. She looked just the same, only in baby version.
